Proof read in systematic stages, one for your computer spell and grammar checkers, one for spelling missed by the computer, one for word usage, one for punctuation and spacing, one for font and layout.
Individual writers often have repeated errors, list them as you work on the document and check them on you final proof.
Check for consistency in spelling of proper names and nouns. And watch for those small articles like it, if, of, in, or that often are interchanged.
Follow up slow, silent proofing with reading out loud which helps with flow and tone. Once a draft is made, print out a copy because many errors are missed when reading a computer screen. (green – recycle your discarded paper and print on the back side)
Ask others to read the material you have proofed. Often it is words or numbers you are sure are right that contain mistakes, like telephone numbers and addresses.
